Iraqi Interior Ministry Announces Thwarting Massive Drug Smuggling and Issuing Deterrent Judicial Sentences

The Iraqi Ministry of Interior announced the success of its security apparatus in thwarting attempts to smuggle massive quantities of narcotics, exceeding 16 tons, and preventing their entry into Iraqi territory over the past three years. The General Directorate for Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Affairs emphasized that this achievement is the result of close cooperation with the Iraqi judiciary, which has issued hundreds of deterrent sentences of execution and life imprisonment against those involved, marking a notable increase in legal accountability compared to previous years. The Directorate also highlighted the expansion of its operations to include high-level coordination with neighboring countries and the region, shifting from a defensive strategy to direct confrontation and executing proactive operations across borders.
