mniraq - The Financial Tribune reported on Monday (September 14, 2026) that Iranian authorities are now counting on establishing a free trade zone with Iraq to overcome the economic repercussions of the US blockade.

The newspaper said that Iranian authorities are in continuous discussions with Baghdad to establish a free trade zone in Mehran through the Zurbatiyah crossing, aiming to bypass the effects of the US blockade and allow goods and commodities to move freely outside the scope of sanctions.

It is noteworthy that the initiative was signed between the two countries in 2021, and aims to establish joint economic zones including about 470 production and service stations of various specializations, with the initiative still requiring an agreement on some legal points according to the newspaper.
