Amid ongoing debates regarding the traffic camera system in Iraq, MP Mohammed Al-Bayati confirmed on Saturday, May 30, 2026, that there are no intentions to abolish the system. He clarified that parliamentary efforts are focused on reorganizing its operational mechanisms to strike a balance between enforcing the rule of law and considering the economic circumstances of citizens. Al-Bayati noted that the reorganization process includes reviewing the value of fines, payment mechanisms, and the grace periods granted to violators, to prevent burdening drivers with compounding financial liabilities. He added that the smart cameras, activated in early 2024, have significantly contributed to reducing traffic accident rates and promoting a culture of compliance, despite challenges related to infrastructure and traffic planning in certain streets of the capital.
