mniraq - The Iraqi Supreme Maritime Authority, affiliated with the Ministry of Transport, announced on Wednesday (September 9, 2026) that it is continuing its steps to enhance the maritime safety system, through field follow-up of the procedures for implementing the Port State Control (PSC) system, to ensure that ships entering Iraqi ports comply with safety requirements and international maritime standards.

The authority stated in a statement that the application of the Port State Control system represents an important step in developing the maritime oversight system and ensuring ships' compliance with international conventions and rules in force, which enhances the safety of lives and property and preserves the marine environment.

It added that the field tour included following up on inspection procedures and their implementation mechanisms, verifying the readiness of ships and safety equipment, the extent of their compliance with international requirements, as well as following up on the conditions of seafarers, working conditions, and procedures related to marine environment protection.

It indicated that these measures come within an ongoing program to develop the capabilities of its inspection staff and raise the efficiency of oversight over ships, in line with the requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the best international practices in the fields of maritime safety and security.
