The General Traffic Directorate has announced impending plans to launch a smart traffic system in the capital, Baghdad, and other provinces. The directorate explained that this advanced system will be activated in registration departments and along major streets, in a move aimed at elevating the level of services provided to citizens, curbing traffic violations, and reducing the rates of traffic accidents.
A media official within the directorate confirmed that the new mechanism relies on detecting violations via smart surveillance cameras, after which the data is transferred to the central system. This data undergoes rigorous auditing processes by specialized officers before being officially recorded as a fine on the vehicle's registry, ensuring accuracy and avoiding errors.
The official pointed out that any change in the mechanisms for calculating or reducing fines requires legal amendment, emphasizing the directorate's commitment as an executive body to applying laws currently in force. He also noted a noticeable decrease in the rate of violations recently, which has directly contributed to a decline in traffic accident numbers, expecting the anticipated smart system to further bolster this tangible improvement in traffic safety.
