A research team from the British University of Manchester concluded that prolonged exposure to sunlight, especially ultraviolet rays, disrupts the delicate biological balance within the skin, leading to accelerated aging beyond what was previously believed. The study relied on comparing skin samples exposed to sunlight with unexposed samples in a group of volunteers, showing that chronic exposure to ultraviolet rays weakens the daily rhythms of genes responsible for cell repair and DNA protection. Scientists explained that damaged skin is unable to activate usual cellular repair mechanisms during the night, which explains the appearance of inflammation, the development of photoaging, and gradual structural damage. The study indicated that the skin possesses a biological clock similar to that in the rest of the body's organs, helping it adapt to the alternation of night and day, but prolonged exposure to sunlight may confuse this internal clock and reset it in an unhealthy manner. Researchers recommended limiting sun exposure during peak periods, avoiding extremely hot or cold air repeatedly, and adopting a diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and collagen sources to maintain skin health.
