UN Praises Iraq's Serious Steps in Combating Corruption and Recovering Looted Funds

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) affirmed that the Iraqi government is taking serious and diligent steps in the areas of asset recovery and anti-corruption. UN officials explained that close cooperation with Iraqi institutions has resulted in supporting the national integrity strategy, drafting pivotal legal reforms, and enhancing the capabilities of the Iraqi Anti-Corruption Academy. The program noted that these efforts have positively impacted international indicators, with Iraq making noticeable progress on the global Corruption Perceptions Index. UN experts emphasized the necessity of continuing this governmental approach to improve the quality of public services and attract investments, warning at the same time that corruption constitutes a major obstacle to achieving sustainable development goals, as global financial losses resulting from it are estimated at trillions of dollars annually.
