mniraq - The Supreme Judicial Council held a meeting on Wednesday (September 9, 2026), chaired by Council President Judge Faeq Zidan, and attended by a number of security and judicial officials, the Minister of Justice, and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Multilateral Affairs and Legal Affairs, to discuss the file of foreign detainees and convicts transferred from Syria to Iraq.
The council stated in a statement that the meeting addressed formulating a unified Iraqi vision regarding the file, after the Karkh First Investigation Court completed the investigation stages and interrogation of the detainees and moved to the trial phase.
It added that the meeting concluded with the adoption of a unified position on handling the files of convicts and detainees, by processing each file separately in accordance with bilateral agreements between Iraq and the countries to which those concerned belong, and in reliance on Iraqi laws and the principle of reciprocity.
It indicated an agreement that the National Center for International Judicial Cooperation would examine any initiative or offer presented by the concerned countries or international organizations regarding providing aid and assistance to Iraq in this file.
