Hossein Ali Haji Deligani, deputy head of the supervisory committee in the Iranian parliament, revealed on Tuesday (May 5, 2026) that his country possesses an advanced cluster missile that disintegrates in the air into 80 separate bombs.
Deligani explained that launching ten missiles of this type means raining 800 bombs simultaneously, raising serious questions about the ability of advanced air defense systems, such as THAAD and Patriot, to deal with this volume of targets.
The announcement comes within the context of unprecedented escalation in the confrontation between Iran on one side, and the United States and Israel on the other, with continued maritime tension in the Strait of Hormuz.
The revelation of this weapon is linked to a fierce war phase that began on February 28 last, and resulted in fundamental changes in regional engagement rules.
Tehran has sought, in recent weeks, to establish a new deterrence equation that includes threats to close the Strait of Hormuz, in addition to showcasing its missile and drone capabilities.
