General Traffic Directorate Reveals Legal Amendments Including Fine Reductions and Window Tinting Regulations

The General Traffic Directorate has unveiled a package of strategic proposals to amend the current traffic law, aiming to ease the burden on citizens and achieve sustainable traffic safety. The proposed amendments include a new mechanism for issuing driver's licenses with stricter testing while maintaining the legal age requirement, alongside reducing traffic fines by up to half and abolishing the fine-doubling system. The draft law also sets new maximum speed limits for highways, external roads, and urban routes, and increases the penalty for driving against traffic to deter dangerous violations. In an advanced regulatory move, the directorate proposed allowing vehicle window tinting up to 30% free of charge, while officially unifying and recognizing these procedures with the Kurdistan Region. The directorate highlighted that these measures come at a time when Iraq is recording the lowest traffic accident rates in the region according to World Health Organization standards.
