mniraq - A specialized environmental observatory revealed on Sunday, August 23, 2026, the detection of approximately 500 pollution sources threatening the Tigris River, warning that five Iraqi governorates are the most affected by these pollutants, which negatively impact water and food security as well as public health. The report explained that the river faces continuous violations due to the untreated discharge of sewage, medical, and industrial waste, noting the presence of 23 severe pollution hotspots in the capital, Baghdad, alone. The Diyala River was also identified as a major contributor to transferring chemical and organic waste into the Tigris. Basra, Baghdad, Wasit, Maysan, and Dhi Qar governorates are the most impacted, as pollutants accumulate amidst declining water levels, foreshadowing grave health and environmental risks.
