Coordination Framework forces deepened the state of political deadlock on Monday evening (April 20, 2026) after failing in their meeting held at Hikma Movement leader Ammar al-Hakim's home to reach an agreement on a candidate for the premiership. Alliance Secretary-General Abbas al-Ameri announced postponement until next Wednesday, justifying this by saying "the matter needs more time" despite the positive atmosphere that prevailed at the meeting. The Shiite alliance, which holds between 130 and 140 seats in the Council of Representatives, had announced in January the nomination of Nouri al-Maliki before this nomination faced internal and external objections, most notably President Donald Trump's threat to halt American support. With the constitutional deadline approaching, fears are increasing that the country will enter a governmental vacuum that could worsen already deteriorating security and economic conditions.
